Aspie Teen, Adderall, Insomnia & Nightmares, Oh My!

I think the title here might say a lot! Aspie Teen was put on Adderall XR (extended release tabs) about a year and a half ago, and it has had helped his concentration and focus immensely! However, after about 6 months he began to resist taking it, he said that he didn’t like the way it made him feel. I thought it was keeping him up at night, and it was interfering with his appetite.

Last month, after struggling to get ANY work done this school year, he asked go back to his doctor to start on his Adderall again. He realized that he could not focus for even short amounts of time on anything–forget about school work! So we did, made the appointment, got the prescription and he is back on his medication. Again, his focus is very much improved and it is making him feel better this time–more energized and he is not minding not wanting to eat so often. People often resist going on medication for these things because of the chemicals used and the adverse effects, but, at least in Aspie Teen’s case, it is usually much worse to go without treatment. People worried about similar problems might want to at least have a look at the adderall price, in case the problems get so bad that they finally resort to the medication.

The problem now is, and I am not sure it is related is that his insomnia is back, and this time the melatonin does not seem to help at all. Yesterday, I mistakenly let him sleep in (until well past 10 am) so he took his dose later in the day. It may account somewhat for his not sleeping a wink last night–or maybe not. apparently, he couldn’t sleep last night so he stalked my room and any little toss and AND I WAKE UP A LOT, he jumped right in to talk to me.

I got very little sleep last night, and when my melatonin finally started helping I was attacked in the night by a mutant flying Palmetto bug! (I hate these things and they seem to be everywhere this time of the year!) I was up for several hours after that before dosing on and off until this morning.

The effects of not being able to get as much sleep as we need is slowly starting to creep up on us. I feel drained nearly all of the time now and it’s starting to affect my quality of life. It has happened to my friend before. She just couldn’t seem to nod off at night and even if she did, she spent most of it tossing and turning into the early hours. And it wasn’t until she tried the cannabis products from somewhere like Amuse (https://amuse.com/california/los-angeles) did she finally start to experience what it’s like to benefit from a full night’s rest. That makes sense, as medical cannabis has been known to make a difference in one’s sleeping patterns. But as Aspie Teen is on Adderall and I’m on melatonin, I just didn’t think this mixture was the way forward, at least until we speak to a medical practitioner first. If they suggest that medical marijuana is a good idea, we will continue. I’ve even seen that you can purchase cannabis seeds when you go to i49.net, so that could be an idea. Maybe growing our own plant could be fun.

The Tantrum Tot decided this would be a good day to wake up at 5 a.m. when no-one in the house was ready to peel an eyeball open. Aspie Teen has been up with him since then playing and entertaining his little brother so that Mom could get some much-needed sleep! He really is an awesome kid.

Unfortunately, the morning brought on the nightmares and I did not sleep much, but at least I was able to get a couple of hours of rest.

  1. I used to be on adderall (specifically the xr one). I got off of it because recovering from anorexia was impossible otherwise and so was getting any sleep over 2-4 hours as well as dealing with my tmd/tmj issues from grinding down my teeth. Sometimes I contemplate getting on an adhd medicine that is not a stimulant and seeing if it will work considering the trouble I have had with stimulant medicine and that I still lack focus. Now that I am a healthy weight and getting my sleep issues in order, I don’t miss the sensation of bugs crawling on my skin either. I also think I was sent to one of those doctors who was so eager to up anyone’s dosage past what my body can handle (I have always been sensitive to medicine). Not to mention it’d happen anyway because the body gets used to the dose and it stops working.

  2. I know of some teens who benefit from trazadone. I’m no psychiatrist, but I wonder if you’ve heard of anyone else benefiting from that type of medication?

    • I am sure it is of benefit for some. But like all medications it is not for everyone–some of us (me) has been on trazadone, and did not have a good result. In fact, it made me too sleepy, and then doctors gave Provigil to wake me from my trazadone stupor. This is what I have found many times–instead of a dose or medication change the doctors tended to lean towards treating the symptom/side effect (too sleepy) with something else, which honestly makes no sense. It was the beginning of a downward spiral of medication madness for me that I would not soon repeat.

On a different note, I am trying to send you a book, but I need an email address! Mine is [email protected]

  3. We are going through the assessment process with my 15 year old and they believe she has Aspegerors. Sleep is a big issue with her, it gets her so low that she just can’t switch her mind off. It also effects my sleep as she wants to chat about her things at crazy hours in the morning. iPhone cases at 3am is so not fun.
