What if the whole world had Asperger’s?

Some random musing for this morning…

globeLast week I was poking around the internet as I usually do and I came across a headline that said, Does our brains need protection from the modern world? It was an article on the autism speaks website. The article talked about a psychologist in the UK I believe it was, that theorized the rapid increase of autistic children could be due to the increase in air pollution. Well—that headline stuck with me, but it is not at all what this rant is about.

The headline made me think…the rising statistic 1 in 55, the idea that the environment may be a contributing factor…then something hit me!  Could it be that maybe just maybe the world is changing and we need to change too?  Maybe for some unforeseen reason this planet will need more autistic people to inhabit it and mother nature is taking over to ensure it happens?

Maybe, just maybe we as a people are evolving becoming more neuro-diverse—and maybe it is meant to be that way. Math, sciences, computers, engineering…areas that autistics tend to excel  at are very “modern world” jobs. Could our minds be needed?  What if at some time in the future everyone is born autistic and “normal” people are abnormal.  What an interesting world it would be—more direct communication, less dishonesty—and an explosion of incredible, talented minds!

Trusting the universe may have a plan…something to think about.

  1. My theory is that it’s all part of the human spectrum, and these traits are being selected by nature.

    • Hessiafae, a client that I work with at my counseling practice believes this very same thing. I know that I, personally, have been enriched and encouraged by every single autistic person I have come to know, whether online or offline. So I do believe that our world needs more autistic input, yes!

  2. I do believe that autism more evolved than neurotypical. I don’t even think the species will survive unless there is a sharp increase in the number of autistics. And think of how incredible the culture would be if we were all autistic. That is a dream of mine that will never come true in my lifetime.

  3. sounds like paradise!

i dont think that autism is increasing, but that we are more aware of it. before it was something, it was probably what put people in institutions. OR, it was the people who were doing things, inventions, musicians, etc. other geniuses. i think we’ve always been here it was just misunderstood or unknown. 😉 especially for women.
